BOATS For Recreation & Fishing

If you are in the market for a new Boat, there are many Boat Designs and types to choose from. When selecting a New Boat you will need to decide on what size of vessel you are looking for, and of course the size of your budget. Next, where and what body of water will the boat be used. The majority of Boats are bought for recreation or fishing, either on the ocean, lakes or rivers and creeks.

Recreational Boats

Before you can select a Recreational Boat it pays to be aware of the various types of boats that are used for family fun. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular types of Recreational Boats.

Runabouts Typically from 18 to 26 feet in length, a typical runabout today is constructed of moulded fibreglass or aluminium and is powered by an outboard motor or inboard engine. Runabouts usually have seating for 6 to 10 people and provide enough gear storage for a day trip. Runabouts are, by far, the most popular Recreational Boats because of their relative weight and easy towing.

Towboats Similar in design to a runabout, towboats are often referred to as Ski Boats or Wakeboard Boats, their hulls are designed to enhance their towing performance. Towboats are usually fitted with a towing tower. While many Boats are capable of towing skiers no other type does these tasks quite as well as a custom built towboat. Towboats can also double a runabouts, although their performance for general purpose cruising are not quite as good.

Sailboats From small day Sailing Boats of 12-14 feet in length up to ocean going sailboats of 40-50 feet (or longer) in length, Sailboats are for the persons trained in navigating and sailing. Sailboats are usually fitted with an engine or Outboard Motor, but usually only used when entering or leaving harbor, with most sailors preferring to use their sailing skills in open water. Sailing is enjoyable and challenging but is not typically for the beginning Boater.

Cabin Cruisers For those who wish to venture out for a day/evening, or weekend trip, today’s cabin cruisers can provide many of the comforts of home while Cruising on your favourite lake, waterway, or ocean. Cruisers range in size from about 24 feet and typically provide comfortable accommodations for 4 adults or more. Most have a complete galley with refrigerator, stove and microwave as well a head with toilet and shower. Most Cabin Cruisers are fitted with air conditioning and heating as well as hot and cold running water.

Pontoon Boats Generally constructed of aluminium pontoons are quickly becoming the choice of many Boaters on lakes and other bodies of placid water. Pontoons are able to accommodate larger groups of people than runabouts, typically 10-20 persons plus equipment, and they are powered by large Outboard Motors and Inboard Engines to push them through the water at good rate of knots, great for skiing and tubing. Pontoon boats, due to their stability and large deck space are ideal ‘party platforms’.

Fishing Boats

Most boats are typically used for fishing, there are many different types, this is why it may be a little confusing on choosing the design of boat that suits your sort of Fishing. For Example a boat intended for backwaters, small lakes and creeks will not last long in ocean conditions. Here’s a look at some of the more popular types of Fishing Boats and what water conditions they are designed for.

Ultra Light Boats If you want a small engine or a man-powered boat that is easily placed on a pickup truck or on a roof of a car then an ultra-light boat may be your best option. These boats are great for streams, lakes, bays and bayous and come in a wide variety of shapes, from Dories, Inflatable Boats, Kayaks and Canoes.

Drift Boats If your first intention is to fish in slow moving rivers, then a drift boat is perfect for you. Drift boats are designed for fishing while slowly drifting down rivers. There are two basic designs of Drift Boats Western style and Midwestern style. Western Style Drift Boats are also called the McKenzie River drift boats. Midwestern Style Drift Boats can be paddled much quicker and are easier to control in comparison to the Western style drift boats. The latter is intended only to glide down rivers, and the oars are utilized only for maintaining the boat’s position as you go downriver.

Dories For Lake Fishing or in protected waters and bays, a Caroline Dory is usually a popular choice. For Coastal Fishing the Pacific Power Dory is a good choice, this type of boat is very stable with efficient hulls. For Offshore and Ocean Fishing the Grand Banks Dory is one of the most seaworthy boats ever built and can work through almost any weather conditions.

We hope that this article helps you to determine the best Boat that meets the needs of your boating family. Whatever boat you choose, please ensure you abide by your state or country’s Boating Regulations and ensure you have all the necessary Safety Equipment on board, especially Life Jackets or other Personal Flotation Devices (PFD’s).
