How do jet skis and boat engines not flood?
I’ve been thinking about this for a while. All engines need an air intake to allow the fuel to explode, etc. So how does a vehicle made for the water not flood every time a wave crashes into it? Wheres the air intake? or is there some device on the air intake which allows only air into it, and stops water from getting in?

For a stand up jet ski (which undergoes the most rigorous and submerged routines of any watercraft) there are long tubes that are attached to the holes in the hull for the air to flow into the engine bay. At the top of these tubes, is a maze of air passages so most of the water spills out. If water continues through the tubes, it is dumped into the engine compartment. The actual intake manifold/carburetor is not attached to these tubes, but is elevated above the bilge (bottom of the hull) so no water will splash into it. A bilge pump then keeps the water out of the engine bay so it won’t fill up.
