Canoes & Kayaks – A Basic Guide
If you want to enjoy nature and get out on the water you must try Canoeing and Kayaking, more than just a sport, it is a good way to do exercises and meet new people who share the same passion. Canoes and Kayaks have been used for centuries, there are many types available out there in the market, the following are the things to consider when choosing and buying a canoe or kayak.
Canoes are small and narrow sea crafts that are powered by paddles. Originally, they were made out of driftwood and tree bark, some traditional canoe manufacturers still use the same material and design to this day. Canoes are now made from several other materials for example, we can find canoes made of plywood, polyethylene, aluminium or combining wood with other materials, however canoes that are made of pure wood can be heavy and need a more maintenance and care. One of the most important aspects about canoes is that they are very comfortable you can stretch your legs and paddle either kneeling or sitting still leaving space for the user to store gear and whatever other items they need on board. No matter what physical abilities you have or what age you are Canoes are a great option for recreational boaters.
In terms of size and use Kayaks are not that different from Canoes, they can be used in almost in the same conditions, the main difference between both crafts is the seating position, direction and the number of blades on the paddles. Like canoes, kayaks are made of very light materials that are resistant and last for a lifetime such as Kevlar, neoprene, aluminium, fibreglass, polyethylene and inflatable. Historically Kayaks were used mostly in the northern arctic and North America as means of transport and fishing, the designs that were used back then are still considered to this day. Kayaks come in two main categories, closed cockpits or fitted with a spray skirt in order to prevent the water from leaking. Kayaks are easy to paddle due to their design without being held back by the strong wind and despite their size virtually no water or weather condition will prevent them from performing.
When it comes to choosing between a Canoes and Kayaks it depends on how and where you will be using your craft, if you want friends and family in one boat altogether then canoes are the right choice for you, they are very slower than kayaks. However if you are a bit of a thrill seeker and want to encounter more extreme water conditions then kayaks are exactly what you need. Kayaks are designed for fast flowing water including rapids, waterfalls and ocean conditions. Before making any purchase, you must have a basic idea about the differences between canoes and kayaks, and then you make up your mind according to your needs, they are both fun and similar to one another, but you have to buy the one that meets your requirements.
